Dementia Awareness Week

Reading Time: 2 minutes

This week is Dementia Awareness Week; an initiative by the Alzheimer’s Society that we at Bennett Griffin are keen to support.

Local charity Guild Care is the firm’s charity of the year, as voted for by our staff.  It is a fantastic charity that supports people in our community, including those living with dementia and their families and carers.

We kicked off Dementia Awareness Week on 15th May 2016 by sending a team of brave volunteers to Get Dirty for Dementia and raise money for Guild Care’s dementia services.  Our fearless team put their strength and stamina to the test when they tackled a military style obstacle course in the mud and have so far raised over £350 in the process!

Most of our staff are trained Dementia Friends so we were keen to take constructive action to raise money for dementia services in our local area.  The Dementia Friends training aims to change people’s perceptions of dementia.

Two of our solicitors, Ian Macara and Elin Dukes, are also accredited Dementia Friends Champions , which means they have committed to encouraging others to make a positive difference to people living with dementia in their community.  As part of this commitment, they will be offering Dementia Friends Information Sessions to clients, care homes and members of the local community.  If you are interested in attending an Information Session, please contact Ian on 01903 706956.

As the Alzheimer’s Society say on their website, “hundreds of thousands of families are touched by dementia every year and many people don’t know where to turn.  We know dementia can be scary but you don’t have to face it alone.”

If you’re worried that you, or someone close to you, might have dementia, you can call the National Dementia Helpline on 0300 222 11 22 or email helpline@alzheimers.org.uk for advice and support.

At Bennett Griffin, our solicitors are sensitive to the issues that can commonly concern clients living with dementia, and their families, as they look to plan for the future. If you have any questions, please contact Ian Macara on 01903 706956 or im@bennett-griffin.co.uk.
