Do you know what dementia is?

1 in 3 people over 65 are living with Dementia, yet statistics suggest that only 1% of the adult UK population has a Lasting Power of Attorney appointing loved ones to assist them if they were to lose capacity!

The advert on TV for Dementia Friends is a rather moving advert that highlights just how important and valuable it is to have friends and family to support one through what can be a terrifying time.  The harsh reality is that 1 in 3 people over 65 develop dementia and there is no cure yet.

The Mirror reported this weekend ‘The Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Friends campaign aims to spread understanding of a devastating condition, which could be a whole lot more tolerable with a little help from strangers who become “friends” simply because they’ve bothered to find out what having dementia means.

Do you know what dementia is?  Would you know how to help a friend or family member living with dementia?  Become a Dementia Friend today so that we as a nation can better understand this life changing condition, help spot the signs and be in a position to help and guide loved ones through a challenging time.

The Office of the Public Guardian recently issued a 1 page summary of shocking statistics about Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA).  If you would like a copy of the summary, please contact us.  In view of the fact that 1 in 3 people over 65 get dementia, the importance of making a LPA is clearly ignored or not understood.

A LPA enables you to appoint trusted family and/or friends to assist you if you were to ever lose mental capacity.  There are two types of LPA: one dealing with your Property and Finances and the other dealing with Health and Welfare decisions.

If you would like any more information on LPAs then please contact us on 01903 229999 or kef@bennettgriffin.co.uk and ask for one of our Power of Attorney specialists.
