National Carers Week

This week (6th-12th June) sees 2016’s National Carers Week, an annual campaign focused on building carer friendly communities.

3 out of 5 people will become carers at some point in our lives. Whilst many do so out of love and compassion and find the experience extremely rewarding, it is important to ensure that the correct support is in place. There are around 6.5 million people providing unpaid care for loved ones across the UK and without the right support it has been seen to cause ill health, poverty and social isolation.

Carers Week 2016 has been brought together by Age UK, Carers UK, Carers Trust,Independent Age, Macmillan Cancer Support , Multiple Sclerosis Society, and Motor Neurone Disease Association . Each of these organisations offers invaluable support and advice to carers countrywide. Often carers are embarrassed to admit that they are struggling, or simply do not know what support is available. At Bennett Griffin we see the value of family carers and would urge anyone acting in such a role to obtain all the support they can, particular from charities with such specialist knowledge.

We have a team of solicitors who regularly advise clients at risk, their families and carers.Ian Macara, Jo Edwards , and Elin Dukes are experienced in contingency planning for life and responding to health crises and the impact such incidences can have on both the individual concerned and their family. Ian is also one of 71 Panel Deputies approved by the Court of Protection and is appointed to manage the legal and financial affairs of various individuals who lack capacity and are at risk; both Jo and Elin work closely with him on these matters. Our understanding of this field lends itself to our being able to offer comprehensive advice to Attorneys, Deputies, concerned families and carers.

If you are concerned for a loved one, or would like advice on your own position as a family carer, please contact Ian Macara on 01903 706956 or im@bennett-griffin.co.uk.
