The Sussex Property Alliance – June Meeting

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The beautiful location of South Lodge was the venue for  June’s Sussex Property Alliance meeting on Friday 19th June. This was probably one of the main features drawing the audience to the event.

The other attraction was of course the speaker, Mark Berrisford-Smith, Head of Economics, UK Commercial Banking for HSBC.

Mark is very well respected in the in the world of economics and his Linked-In profile mentions him delivering over a 100 presentations a year at conferences and seminars. Having studied economics at The University of Sussex he has a South Coast connection.

Once everyone had gathered and enjoyed a coffee, tea or fresh smoothie, Steve Berrett from Michael Jones  & Company gave a ‘welcome speech’ and outlined the order of events for the next hour or so.

With South Lodge’s excellent reputation for catering and food the next part of the event was a buffet lunch and a tasty treat enjoyed by all.

Once  the food had been eaten, Mark Berrisford-Smith was formally introduced to the audience by Chris Coopey of Carpenter Box.

What might be happening to the UK and world economies was the flavour of Mark’s presentation.  With the Greek economy on it’s knees and the looming deadline for sorting out it’s crisis and agree a way forward with the European Union only a weekend away, Mark had plenty to say about what may or may not be on the horizon come the following Monday.

Mark certainly spoke in a topical and engaging manner, with his formal presentation over, he took questions from the floor. The focus was for more detail on what may be the outcome of a Greek exit from the EU.

For me, the main message of the presentation was the realisation that actually the UK economy has been doing well, it just doesn’t quite appear so with the rest of the EU lagging behind and also, that like just about everything else in life, the economy is cyclical and things will sooner or later once again slow down!

With the Q & A session over, Rob Fawcett of Bennett Griffin LLP, wrapped up the meeting, thanking the attendees for their time, wishing them all a safe journey home and well for the future.

All in all another successful event for Sussex Property Alliance.
