Four Reasons For Updating Your Will

Reading Time: 2 minutes

It’s the start of a new year, and thoughts may have turned to resolutions and life goals.

Is updating your Will one of those?

Probably not. And you’re not alone.

Updating your Will – or even writing your first one – can seem like such an unnecessary task. Especially when we’re all so busy.

New You, New Will

The last few years have been difficult for all of us in one way or another. We have all seen significant changes in the way we live, with Covid and, most recently, the cost of living.

These variations in your life may have impacted your finances, your relationship, and your business interests.

And it is because of these changes that we should all be thinking about reviewing our Wills

Why Is Updating Your Will Important?

If you have a Will, it can be very easy to consider that particular life task complete and forget about it.

However, it is worth regularly reflecting on your wishes to see whether any changes in your circumstances could impact your previous decisions.

For example:

Marital Status

For example, you might have married, separated, divorced, or are in a new relationship.

Choice of Executors

Have you outlived your Executors, or has your relationship with them deteriorated?

Financial / Business Interests

Have your business interests changed since lockdown, or have you started a new business?

Have your financial circumstances changed, and do you need to consider Tax planning?

Beneficiaries

Have you left the majority of your Estate to whom you wish to?

Have you considered the worst-case scenario if your immediate family pass away; where would you wish your Estate to pass to?
